The ASTM D2000 standard, published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), covers the properties of vulcanized rubber materials (natural rubber, recycled rubber, synthetic rubbers, alone or in combination) intended for use in rubber products for automotive applications, but not limited to this.

This classification system can serve many of the needs of other industries in much the same way as SAE grade steels. However, it should not be forgotten that this system can be revised in line with automotive needs. It is recommended to always use the latest revision.

This classification standard is based on the assumption that the properties of all rubber products can be arranged in characteristic material descriptions. These designations are determined by types according to thermal aging resistance and by classes according to resistance to oil swelling. Thus, together with values ​​that define additional requirements, baseline levels are established that allow the quality of all elastomeric materials to be fully defined.

In all cases where the provisions of this classification system would conflict with those of the detailed specifications for a particular product, the latter shall take precedence. Values ​​stated in SI units should be accepted as standard.

If the rubber product is to be used for purposes where the requirements are too specific to be fully determined by this classification system, the buyer should consult the supplier beforehand, establish the appropriate properties, test methods, and specification test limits.
