ASTM D217 Standard Test Methods for Cone Penetration of Lubricating Grease

The ASTM D217 standard covers four procedures for measuring the consistency of lubricating greases by penetrating a cone of specified size, mass, and finish. Penetration is measured in tenths of a millimeter. The National Lubricant Grease Institute (NLGI)² classifies greases according to their consistency as measured by the penetration studied.

Raw, machined and long-term processed penetration procedures are applicable to greases with a penetration of 85 to 475, ie greases with consistency numbers from NLGI 6 to NLGI 000. The block penetration procedure can be applied to greases that are hard enough to retain their shape. Such greases usually penetrate under eighty-five tenths of a millimeter.

Untreated penetrations often do not represent the consistency of greases used as effectively as machined penetrations. The latter is generally preferred for inspection of lubricating greases. None of the four procedures is considered suitable for measuring the consistency of petrolatums by penetration. Test Method D937 should be used for such products.
