ASTM D2240 Standard Test Method for Rubber Property - Durometer Hardness

The ASTM D2240 test identifies eight types of rubber hardness testers known as durometers: types A, B, C, D, DO, O, OO, and M. The procedure for determining the indentation hardness of substances classified as thermoplastic elastomers, vulcanized (thermoset) rubber, elastomeric materials, cellular materials and some plastics is also described.

This test method is not equivalent to other indentation hardness methods and tool types, particularly those described in Test Method D 1415. This test method is not applicable for testing coated fabrics.

ASTM D2240 Typical Test Parameters

  • Initial hardness or time-dependent hardness: Usually initial
  • Sample shape: Flat and homogeneous (no texture)
  • Durometer scale to use: The most popular durometer scales are “A” and “D”. Combined, these two scales cover a hardness range from rubber to nylon.
  • Number of samples per item: 1 sample, 5 readings
  • Sample dimensions: 2” X 2” or more, minimum 6,4 mm (0,25 inch) thick
  • Conditioning and testing Temperature: 23 ± 2 °C
  • Conditioning and relative humidity testing: 50% ± 5%

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only. Many of the dimensions specified in the SI are direct conversions from the U.S. Traditional System to accommodate the instrumentation, practices, and procedures that existed before the 1975 Metric Conversion Act.

All materials, instruments or equipment used for determining mass, force or size shall have traceability to the National Institute of Standards and Technology or other internationally recognized organization by nature.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
