This standard covers the calculation of color tolerances and minor color differences between opaque samples, such as painted panels, plastic plates or textile samples, from instrumentally measured color coordinates based on daylight illumination.
Application D4086 should be used to validate instrumental results when it is suspected that samples may be metameric, ie they may be visually the same color but have different spectral curves.
Tolerances and differences determined by these procedures are expressed in terms of approximately uniform visual color perception in CIE 1976 CIELAB competitor color space, CMC tolerance units, CIE94 tolerance units. DIN6176 color difference formula or CIEDE99 color difference units given in DIN 2000.
For product specification, buyer and seller must agree on the allowable color tolerance and procedure for calculating color tolerance between test sample and reference. Each material and usage condition may require certain color tolerances because other appearance factors (for example, sample affinity, gloss, and texture) can affect the correlation between the magnitude of a measured color difference and its commercial acceptability.
