The ASTM D2256 standard covers the determination of the tensile properties of single, plied or cabled monofilament, multifilament and spun yarns, excluding yarns that stretch more than 0,05% when tension is increased from 1,0 to 5.0 cN/tex.
This test method covers the measurement of the breaking force and elongation of yarns and includes guidelines for calculating breaking strength, initial modulus, beam modulus and toughness at break. Options for testing samples are: (A) straight, (B) knotted and (C) looped form.
Test conditions are included for testing samples in conditioned air, wet, non-immersed, wet, immersed, oven-dried, high-temperature exposure, or low-temperature exposure.
Special methods for testing yarns made from certain fibers; ie for glass, linen, hemp, ramie and kraft paper and certain products; ie, tire cords and string have been published for Methods D885 and Specification D578.
Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.
