ASTM D1907 Standard Test Method for Linear Density (Yarn Number) of Yarn by Hank Method

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D1907 standard. The ASTM D1907 standard covers the determination of the linear density of all types of yarn in bundle form, subject to size and stretch limitations. In all conventional yarn numbering systems, preparation is made to express the yarn linear density.

ASTM D1907 Standard Test Method for Linear Density (Yarn Number) of Yarn by Hank Method

This test method is applicable to yarns that stretch less than 0,25% when the tension on the yarn is increased from 0,75 to 0,25 cN/tex [0,75 to 5 gf/tex]. By mutual agreement and using a lower winding tension than specified, this method can also be adapted to measure the linear density of yarns that stretch more than 5% under the above force.

This method can be applied to yarns finer than 2000 tex. However, it can also be adapted to coarser yarns using hanks shorter than the specified lengths and alternative winding conditions acceptable to the parties involved.

Depending on the procedure used to calculate the moisture content and the actual moisture content or the finish content, or both, of the yarn under test, one or more of the following options may be used.

Uncleaned Thread

  • Yarn in equilibrium with the standard atmosphere for testing textiles
  • Oven dried yarn
  • Oven dried yarn plus commercial moisture recovery

Washed Yarn

  • Cleaned yarn in equilibrium with the standard atmosphere for testing textiles
  • Oven-dried, cleaned yarn
  • Oven-dried, cleaned yarn plus commercial moisture recovery
  • Oven-dried, cleaned yarn plus commercial fraction (commercial moisture recovery plus margin for finishing)

Samples used to determine the yarn linear density can also be used to determine the hank breaking strength of the yarn. This method therefore provides the sequence of steps to follow to determine both yarn properties.

Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
