ASTM D7412 Standard Test for Petroleum and Hydrocarbon Based Lubricants

This test method uses a Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer to monitor the consumption of phosphate antiwear additives in petroleum and hydrocarbon-based lubricants in use as a result of normal machine operation. Monitoring the depletion of phosphate anti-wear additives in in-use lubricants may indicate unusual wear of the machine or severe operating conditions. This test method is designed as a quick, simple spectroscopic control for monitoring phosphate antiwear additives in petroleum and hydrocarbon-based lubricants in use.

Obtaining FT-IR spectral data for measuring phosphate antiwear additives in in-use oil and lubricant samples is described in Application D7418. This test method presents measurement and data interpretation parameters for phosphate antiwear additives using both direct trend analysis and differential (spectral subtraction) trend analysis.

This test method is based on the trend of spectral changes associated with phosphate antiwear additives in petroleum and hydrocarbon-based lubricants in use. Warnings or alarm limits can be set on the basis of a fixed minimum value for a single measurement, or alternatively, based on the rate of change of the measured response.

It is not the intent of this test method to establish or recommend normal, stimulus, alert, or alert limits for any machine. These limits should be established with advice and guidance from the machine manufacturer and maintenance group.

This test method is for petroleum and hydrocarbon-based lubricants and does not apply to ester-based oils, including polyol esters or phosphate esters.
