ASTM D2414 Standard Test Method for Carbon Black - Oil Absorption Number (OAN)

The ASTM D2414 test covers the determination of the oil absorption number of carbon black. The oil absorption number of a carbon black is related to the processing and vulcanizing properties of the carbon black-containing rubber compounds.

ASTM D2414 Standard Test Method for Carbon Black - Oil Absorption Number (OAN)

In this test method, oil is added via a fixed ratio burette to a sample of carbon black in the mixing chamber of an absorptometer. As the sample absorbs the oil, the mixture changes from a free-flowing state to a semi-plastic agglomeration state, with an increase in viscosity. This increased viscosity is transmitted to the torque sensing system of the absorptometer.

When the viscosity of the mixture reaches a predetermined torque level, the absorptometer and the burette will turn off at the same time. The volume of added oil is read directly from the reading burette. The oil volume per unit mass of carbon black is the oil absorption number.

Either DBP or paraffin oil is acceptable for use with standard pelleted grades, including N-series carbon blacks in Classification D 1765. OAN testing using paraffin oil on some specific blacks and powdered blacks can result in unacceptable differences compared to OAN testing using DBP. oil Although studies show that both oils show similar sensitivity, paraffin oil offers the advantage of being non-hazardous; Even FDA-approved grades are available. For both oils (Calibration, Procedure, Calculation and Report) it will be consistent with the oil selected for use.

Peer testing between suppliers and users, definitive for paraffin oil
should use DBP oil until data is available.

Purity of Reagents - reagent grade chemicals will be used in all tests. Unless otherwise noted, all reagents are intended to conform to the specifications of the American Chemical Society's Committee on Analytical Reagents, where such specifications are available.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
