ASTM D2457 Standard Test Method for Specular Luster of Plastic Films and Solid Plastics

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D2457 standard. The ASTM D2457 standard describes procedures for measuring the gloss of plastic films and solid plastics, both opaque and transparent. It includes four different brightness angles.

• 60 degrees is recommended for medium gloss films,
• 20 degrees is recommended for very glossy films,
• 45 degrees is recommended for medium and low gloss films,
• 85 degrees is recommended for medium and low gloss films and
• 75 degrees is recommended for plastic siding and sub-surface.

The 85-deg, 75-deg, 60-deg, and 20-deg apparatus and measurement method replicates those in Test Methods D523 and D3679; Those for the 45° procedure are similarly taken from Test Method C346.

Specular Luster is a measure of the light reflected from the surface of a material. Gloss can be material-specific, a result of the molding process, or a result of surface texture. Gloss can also be affected by environmental factors such as weather conditions or surface wear. Thus, Gloss can be useful in product development, process development and end-use performance testing.

Gloss measurements are always referenced to a standard and the angle of reflection (20°, 60° or 85°) must be specified. The glossmeter is set to the appropriate angle, calibrated and then checked with the standard supplied with the meter. The meter is then placed on the test sample and a reading is taken.
