This test method considers, but is not limited to, a variety of suggested test specimen geometries, as listed in the appendices. In addition, test specimen manufacturing methods, test modes (force, displacement or strain control), test rates (force ratio, stress ratio, displacement ratio or strain ratio), allowable bending, and data collection and reporting procedures are covered.

This test method is primarily applicable to advanced ceramics that exhibit macroscopically isotropic, homogeneous, and continuous behavior.

While this test method applies primarily to monolithic advanced ceramics, certain bristle- or particle-reinforced composite ceramics, as well as certain discontinuous fiber-reinforced composite ceramics, can meet these macroscopic behavior assumptions. Generally, continuous fiber ceramic composites (CFCCs) do not exhibit macroscopically isotropic, homogeneous, continuous behavior and this application is not recommended for these materials.
