ASTM D566 Laboratory Drop Point Measurement

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D566 standard. The ASTM D566 standard covers the determination of the dropping point of lubricating grease. This test method is not recommended for use at bath temperatures above 288 °C. The dropping point has no effect on the performance of the grease.

Cooking oils are frequently used in food processing. The choice of this raw material is important for the quality of the finished product. Indeed, an unsuitable mix can affect the quality of the product and thus consumer satisfaction.

Therefore, it is necessary to know the thermal behavior of these oils at various temperatures. These fats and oils melt progressively over a wide melting range. Therefore, determining the dropping point allows these oils and fats to be tested efficiently in a reliable quality control procedure.

The dropping point is an indicator of the heat resistance of a lubricating grease. It is determined by a temperature at which the sample changes from a semi-solid state to a liquid state under certain test conditions. This depends on the type of thickener used, the cohesion of the oil and the nature of the grease. Drop point is the upper temperature limit at which a grease retains its structure, but this temperature is not necessarily the maximum temperature at which the grease can be used.

The drop point is used in conjunction with other characteristics to determine a grease's suitability for a particular application and quality control. However, the dropping point is not sufficient to evaluate the service performance of the grease as it is determined in the static condition.

This test method uses mercury-filled thermometers. Mercury has been designated by many regulatory agencies as a hazardous substance that can cause serious medical problems. Mercury or its vapors have proven to be harmful to health and corrosive to materials. Be careful when using mercury and products containing mercury. See the applicable product Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for additional information. There is the potential for the sale of mercury or products containing mercury, or both, to be prohibited by local or national law. Users must determine the legality of sales in their location.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
