DC Resistance or Conductivity of Insulation Materials

Standard Test Methods for DC Resistance or Conductivity of Insulation Materials

ASTM D257 Test

These test methods cover direct current procedures for the measurement of dc insulation resistance, volume resistance and surface resistance. From such measurements and geometric dimensions of samples and electrodes, both the volume and surface resistance of electrical insulating materials, as well as the corresponding conductivities and conductivities can be calculated.

These test methods are not suitable for measuring the electrical resistance / conductivity of moderately conductive materials. Test Method D4496 is used to evaluate such materials. This standard describes several general alternative methods for measuring resistance (or conductivity).

Specific materials can be optimally tested using standard ASTM test methods applicable to specific material that defines both tensile stress limits and finite electrification times, as well as sample configuration and electrode geometry. These individual specific test methodologies could better define accuracy and deviation for determination.
