ASTM D2602 Cold Starts in Vehicles - Test for Oil Viscosity

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM D2602 testing. This standard provides the basis for the development of a standard laboratory test that measures the viscosity of an oil under suitable temperature and shear rate conditions.

However, when the original CCS method (Apparent Viscosity of Low-Temperature Engine Oils using a Cold Start Simulator, D 2602) was modified to reflect the shift from single-temperature determinations (-18°C) to a multi-temperature method, concerns were related to test accuracy and response of viscoelastic oils. prevented the method from being revised to an ASTM standard.

To address these concerns, the development of recently modified CCS procedures has been somewhat hampered by the lack of available reference oils to support engine cranking data. To meet this need, Esso Petroleum Canada began a limited study of engine cold cranking on four test oils in 1987.

Five different late model passenger cars equipped with 4- and 6-cylinder petrol engines were repeatedly cold-started at the following temperatures: 15°C and -25°C in the All-Weather Chassis Dynamometer facility. Vehicle starting results and samples of test oils were transmitted to the CCS task force in 1987. More recently, Esso Petroleum Canada undertook a detailed cold start/pumpability assessment of multigrade engine oils in three different heavy-duty trucks.
