This test method describes the determination of the resistance to thermal shock of advanced ceramics by water quenching. The method is based on the experimental principle of rapid quenching of a test sample at an elevated temperature in a room temperature water bath.
The effect of thermal shock is assessed by measuring the reduction in flexural strength produced by rapid quenching of test specimens heated at various temperatures. For a quantitative measurement of thermal shock resistance, a critical temperature range is determined with a reduction in average flexural strength of at least 30%.
The test method does not determine thermal stresses that develop as a result of steady-state temperature differences within a ceramic body or thermal expansion mismatch between joined bodies. The test method is not intended to determine the resistance of a ceramic material to repeated impact. The method is not suitable for ceramic components, as the determination of thermal shock resistance is made by evaluating the retained strength; however, test specimens cut from the components may be used.
The test method is primarily designed for dense monolithic ceramics, but can also be applied to certain composites that are macroscopically homogeneous, such as hair- or particle-reinforced ceramic matrix composites.
