ASTM D2794 Test

ASTM D2794 is a standard test method for the resistance of organic coatings to the effects of rapid deformation (impact). This test involves applying organic coatings to suitable 24 gauge metal panels and dropping a standard weight from a distance to induce an indentation that deforms the coating as well as the substrate.

ASTM D2794 Test

In the practice of ASTM D2794 testing, the point at which failure can occur can be determined by increasing the distance the weight is dropped. Paint films typically crack and break up. Using a magnifying glass such as copper sulfate or a pinhole detector is one way to get better visualization of the crack. Stereoscopic assessments can also be used.

This test method is usually performed after specimens have been subjected to an accelerated aging treatment such as ASTM G154 for sun exposure aging and after heat aging.

Coatings applied to substrates are subject to significantly varying effects, either during construction or during use. This test method has been found to be very useful in estimating the impact resistance of organic coatings, the number of inch-pounds required to produce cracking in the deformed coating.

Typical Experimental parameters for ASTM D2794 testing;

  • Number of samples / products: at least four samples
  • Preparation of samples: Apply uniform coatings of the material to be tested to 24 gauge (0,025 inch or 0,63 mm) steel panels according to your procedure.
  • Indent type: intrusion or extrusion (direct/indirect)
  • Metal type for substrate: to be specified
  • Standard weight: to be specified
