This test method involves determination by means of a glass hydrometer in conjunction with a series of calculations of API gravity of crude oil and petroleum products that are normally treated as liquids and have a Reid vapor pressure of 101.325 kPa (14.696).

Gravities are determined at 60°F (15.56°C) or converted to values ​​at 1250°F via the appendix to the D11.1 oil gauge charts manual (API MPMS Section 60). These tables are not applicable to non-hydrocarbons or essentially pure hydrocarbons such as aromatics.

The initial values ​​obtained are uncorrected hydrometer readings, not density measurements. Values ​​are measured in a hydrometer at the reference temperature or other suitable temperature and the readings are corrected against the reference temperature via the meniscus effect, thermal glass expansion effect, alternative calibration temperature effects, and volume correction tables.

Values ​​stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
