The ASTM D3079 standard covers the determination of the water vapor transmission rate for flexible heat-sealed packages under certain exposure conditions. Adequate thermal insulation efficiency must be determined before this test method.
This test method determines the water vapor barrier properties of the package. With appropriate precautions and past experience, reproducible results can be achieved to assist in the selection of appropriate packaging materials required to achieve the desired product shelf life. This test method can be used to establish a performance specification.
There are instruments on the market that aim to measure the water vapor transmission of films more easily and quickly than the methods described in Test Methods D3079 and E96. They essentially run the same kinds of tests as ASTM methods, but they do it instrumentally. However, it appears that no side-by-side tests have been conducted comparing the results from measurements with such devices with these ASTM methods for precision and accuracy.
