ASTM D3101 Test

Standard Test Method for Thermal Insulation Performance of ASTM D3101 Distribution Packages

ASTM D3101 helps to determine the quality of thermal insulation in a package. It tests the thermal stability of the ingredients when exposed to different temperatures. Packages evaluated with this test are often used for high-value, high-risk materials. It also provides information about performance when a package needs to be set at a certain temperature throughout the distribution.

Energy source, contents, outer packaging etc. that may affect the results of the test. There are many factors such as. Therefore, it is important to try to use the real package for testing. Simulation packages are not preferred.

At least three samples should be tested. The test sample should be those used in production. However, experimental packaging designs (or prototypes) can be used if their specifications are close to the actual package. For testing, the package should be closed and sealed, as usual. All packaging must be conditioned for at least 24 hours before testing. Preconditioning is not a requirement for all test procedures.

Requirements and apparatus for ASTM D3103:

  • Temperature profile of the external atmosphere
  • Field data time-temperature profile
  • Editing requirements
  • Contract requirements
  • Constant temperature
  • Test room
  • Test room controller
  • Single or multi-channel data collection unit (DAU)
  • Calibration Reference Standard
  • Constant Temperature Bath

Sensors must be calibrated to begin testing. Place the sensors in a constant temperature bath to ensure that the sensors are working properly and providing accurate information. If possible, the sensors should be placed directly on or in the package before conditioning. Then condition the pack to pre-determined standards. If cooling and heating elements that can directly contact the sensors are used (eg dry ice) and the sensors are outside the package, the packaging should be covered to prevent direct contact. The packet (s) should then be placed in a perimeter room set in the desired atmosphere. It is important that the package does not touch any walls or the floor of the room.

If more than one package is being tested, they must be separated with a minimum distance of 6 inches. They must be placed in the direction that they will be along the shipment. Data must be collected and verified for accuracy. It is important to recheck the sensors throughout the test to make sure they work with precision. The data must be saved for reporting.

As a result of all this, the test laboratory will prepare a report. The report should include all relevant information and data collected during the test and follow the instructions of ASTM D3103.
