ASTM D3171 Standard Test Methods for Component Content of Composite Materials

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D3171 standard. These test methods determine the component content of composite materials in one of two approaches.

ASTM D3171 Standard Test Methods for Component Content of Composite Materials

Test Method I, physically removes the matrix by digestion or firing in one of seven procedures, leaving the reinforcement essentially unaffected, thus allowing calculation of the percent void volume as well as the reinforcement or matrix content (by weight or volume).

Test Method IIcalculates the reinforcement or matrix content (by weight or volume) and the cured ply thickness based on the measured thickness of the laminate. Test Method II is not applicable to the measurement of void volume.

These test methods are primarily intended for two-part composite material systems. However, although not all test results can be determined in all cases, special provisions can be made to extend these test methods to filled material systems containing more than two components.

The procedures in it are designed to be particularly effective for certain classes of polymers or metal matrixes.

Method Iassumes that the reinforcement is essentially unaffected by the decay or ignition environment. A procedure for correcting results for minor changes in supplementation is included. Procedures A through F are based on chemical removal of the matrix, while Procedure G fires the matrix in a furnace to remove the matrix.

Method IIassumes that the fiber area weight of the reinforcement material form is known or controlled with an acceptable tolerance. The presence of gaps is not measured. Equations 9 and 10 assume zero space content to perform the calculation.

Values given in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

This international standard has been developed in accordance with the internationally accepted principles of standardization set out in the Principles decision on the development of international standards, guidelines and recommendations published by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
