ASTM D3257 Standard Test Methods for Aromatics in Mineral Spirits by Gas Chromatography

This test method covers the determination of ethylbenzene and aromatics with a total of eight carbons (C149) and heavier in the concentration range of 210 to 300% in mineral spirits with a distillation range of 410 to 0.1°C (30 to 8°C).

It is accepted by analytical chemists that single column gas chromatography analysis of an unknown sample is risky. In such cases, for example several different gas chromatography columns, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry or gas chromatography/infrared, etc. For absolute positive identification, multiple and different analytical techniques should be used.

If oxygen compounds are present, they may mix and cause erroneous results. Such oxygenated compounds are not normally found in mineral spirits.

The following three test methods are covered:

• Test Method A, measurement of ethylbenzene content, C8 plus higher aromatics (excluding ethylbenzene) and total aromatics via single-pack column gas chromatographic analysis.
• Test Method B, measurement of ethylbenzene content by rapid packed column gas chromatographic analysis.
• Test Method C, measurement of ethylbenzene content, C8 plus higher aromatics (excluding ethylbenzene) and total aromatics by means of a capillary column gas chromatographic analysis.
