ASTM D3273 Standard Specification for Resistance to Mold Growth on the Surface of Interior Linings in an Environmental Chamber

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM D3273 testing. This test method describes a small environmental chamber and operating conditions for reproducibly evaluating the relative resistance of paint films to surface mold fungi, mold growth in a severe indoor environment, over a period of 4 weeks.

The device is designed to be easily created or obtained by any interested party and will replicate the results achieved in a large tropical room.

This test method can be used to evaluate the comparative resistance of the interior coating to accelerated mold growth. A certain degree of performance does not imply a certain amount of time for a fungus-free coating. However, a better graded coating almost always performs better in actual end use.

This test method is designed for the accelerated evaluation of an interior coating's resistance to fungal attack. The use of this test method to evaluate the performance of exterior coatings has not been validated and limitations have not been established for such use.

If this test method is to be used for testing a siding system, a precautionary statement should be added to interpret the results as outside the scope of this test method. Any accelerated wear (seepage, abrasion machine exposure, etc.) should be reported and further reference should be made to the fact that this is outside the current scope of this test method.

For the chamber to operate reproducibly during the short test period, temperature and humidity must be effectively controlled within specified relatively narrow limits. The severity and rate of mold growth on a film is a function of the moisture content of both the film and the substrate. 32,5 ± 1 % RH at 90 ± 2°C (95 ± 3°F) is required for test panels to grow rapidly and maintain a sufficient humidity level to support mold growth.

Values stated in SI units will be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
