ASTM D3274 Test to Evaluate the Degree of Surface Deformation of Paint Films by Fungal, Algae Growth, or Soil, Dirt Deposition

EUROLAB, together with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM D3274 testing. Fungus growth, often referred to as mold in the paint industry, causes degradation of the paint film exposed outdoors.

ASTM D3274 Test to Evaluate the Degree of Surface Deformation of Paint Films by Fungal, Algae Growth, or Soil, Dirt Deposition

Visual assessment of paint surface deformation due to fungal or algae attack is necessary to compare the performance of different coatings. This mold assessment assessment method is intended for use on paint films exposed to exterior facades. This method can be used to grade internal fungal or algae growth, however, it should be noted that the growth patterns on the inner surfaces differ from those on the outer due to the lack of weather effects. It is primarily designed for test specimens, but can also be sued for grading mold growth in larger structures such as entire homes. If this is used for large areas, the project should be broken up into smaller sections.

This method is for field use only for macro grading of surface deformation. Visual scales are for use with the naked eye to rate algae, fungus or dirt deformity on larger surface areas such as test panels, siding panels or entire buildings. Techniques for soil and dirt separation are included.

Fungi will grow in most outdoor exposed paint films in conditions conducive to growth. Test procedures such as Applications D1006 , D3456 and G7 are available describing natural exposure tests that can be used to expose paint films to form fungal or algae growth.

The pictorial references available with this test method provide a numerical basis for rating the degree of fungal or algae growth on paint films. This standard does not purport to address all safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
