ASTM D3306 Tests for Automobile and Light Duty Glycol-Based Engine Coolant

The ASTM D3306-20 standard, developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), describes requirements for ethylene glycol or propylene glycol-based engine coolants used in automobiles or other light-duty cooling systems.

ASTM D3306 Tests for Automobile and Light Duty Glycol-Based Engine Coolant

Engine coolants will work effectively to protect against freezing, boiling and corrosion when:

When concentrates are used in water at a concentration of 40 to 70 percent by volume
Pre-diluted glycol-based engine coolants when using 50 volume percent or higher engine coolant concentrate, or when used without further dilution
Within the framework of the said standard, coolants are classified as follows:

  • Cooler type I: Concentrate based on ethylene glycol
  • Refrigerant type II: Concentrate based on propylene glycol
  • Cooler type V: Concentrate based on ethylene glycol with glycerin
  • Coolant type III: Ethylene glycol pre-dilution 50 percent or higher engine coolant concentrate by volume
  • Coolant type IV: Propylene glycol pre-dilution 50 percent or higher engine coolant concentrate by volume
  • Coolant type VI: Pre-dilution based on ethylene glycol containing 50 percent or higher engine coolant concentrate by volume

This standard is based on performance information of engine coolants prepared from new or unused components. It also applies to engine coolants prepared using glycol produced from recycled or reprocessed used coolant or reprocessed industrial source glycol, provided they meet the requirements of the ASTM E1177 standard.

In general, ethylene glycol or propylene glycol based liquids are homogeneous chemical liquids that reduce the freezing point of the coolant, raise the boiling point and prevent corrosion when added to the cooling systems of engines.

Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, within the framework of national and international standards, ASTM D3306-20 for glycol-based engine coolant for automobile and light duty. It also provides testing services within the framework of the standard specification standard.
