This test method involves the use of a portable refractometer to determine the approximate freeze protection provided by ethylene and propylene glycol based coolant solutions used in engine cooling systems and special applications.
Some appliances have an additional freeze protection scale for methoxypropanol coolants. Others carry an additional scale that is calibrated for density or specific gravity readings of sulfuric acid solutions so that the refractometer can be used to determine the state of charge of lead acid batteries.
