ASTM D3359 Standard Test Methods for Grading Adhesion with Tape Testing

The ASTM D3359 test covers procedures for evaluating the adhesion of relatively ductile coating films to metallic substrates by applying and removing pressure sensitive tape over cuts made in the film.

ASTM D3359 Standard Test Methods for Grading Adhesion with Tape Testing

Test Method A is primarily intended for field use, while Test Method B is more suitable for use in laboratory or shop environments. Also, Test Method B is not considered suitable for films thicker than 125 µm (5 mil) unless wider gap cuts are used and there is an express agreement between the buyer and seller.

This test method is used to evaluate whether the adhesion of a coating to a substrate is sufficient for the user's application. They do not distinguish between higher adhesion levels where more complex measurement methods are required.

This test method is similar in content (but not technically equivalent) to ISO 2409. In multi-layer systems, adhesion failure may occur between coats so that the adhesion of the coating system to the substrate cannot be determined.

Both tests are performed by scratching the coating onto the substrate in a specific pattern with a sharp knife, applying a pressure-sensitive tape, and then rapidly pulling the tape off the surface. When the coating is thicker than 5 mils, an X-cut (each leg is approximately 1.5 inches long) is made in the film.

When the pavement thickness is less than 5 mils, a cross-cut lattice pattern is created with six or eleven cuts in each direction. For veneers up to 2 mil thick, eleven incisions are made 1 mm apart. For veneers between 2 mils and 5 mils thick, six incisions are made, 2 mm apart. For both methods, a steel or other hard metal straight edge or template is recommended to ensure the right angle at the intersection (30-45°) in the case of straight cuts and X-cuts.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only.

This standard does not purport to address, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices prior to use and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions.
