The ASTM D3833 standard covers a procedure for measuring the water vapor transmission rate of the pressure sensitive tape. The results of this test method will indicate the relative permeability of the tape by water vapor along its smallest dimension (usually normal to the support of the tape).
The water vapor path parallel to the adhesive cup interface is great compared to the thickness of the tape, and the latter is usually an almost exclusive source of transmitted vapor.
Some types of tape allow the adhesive to become the main barrier, allowing a relatively free path in a direction normal to the back or along the backing paths parallel to the adhesive-cup interface.
If the adhesive does not continue to adhere to the container flange during exposure times that allow undesirable pathways for water vapor to form, the measurement should be considered undelivered. As a result, it can be considered that the tape is not suitable for use on surfaces such as cup flanges under humidity conditions close to that of the test.
Interest in the tape material as a water vapor barrier may simply be. In this case, it may matter little how well the tape adheres to the bowl flange and steps must be taken to prevent any edge effects.
