ASTM D3580 Standard for Vibration Testing of Products

This standard covers the determination of resonances of unpackaged products and components of unpackaged products by vertical linear motion at the surface on which the product is mounted for testing.

Two alternative testing methods are offered:

• Test Method A—Resonance Search Using Sinusoidal Vibration and
• Test Method B—Resonance Search Using Random Vibration.

The two test methods are not necessarily equivalent and may not produce the same results. It is possible for tests using random vibration to better represent the transport environment and be performed faster than sine tests.

This information can be used to study the response of products to vibration for the purposes of product design or the design of a container or inner packaging that will minimize transport vibration inputs at these critical frequencies when the products' resonances are within the expected transport environment. Frequency range. Since vibration damage is most likely to occur at product resonance frequencies, these resonances can be considered as potential product vulnerability points.

Information from optional standby testing methods can be used to evaluate the fatigue properties of resonant components and for product modification. This may be necessary if a product's response requires the design of an impractical or excessively costly shipping container.

These test methods do not necessarily simulate the vibration effects that the product will encounter in the operating or usage environment. Other, more appropriate test procedures should be used for this purpose.

The test levels given in these test methods represent a correlation of best available information from research research and experience in the use of these test methods. If more applicable or accurate data are available, they should be replaced.
