ASTM D3654 Standard Test Methods for Shear Adhesion of Pressure-Sensitive Tapes

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D3654 standard. ASTM D3654 standard specifies procedures for determining the ability of pressure sensitive tapes and labels to remain adhered under constant load applied parallel to the surface of the tape and substrate.

ASTM D3654 Standard Test Methods for Shear Adhesion of Pressure-Sensitive Tapes

Procedure A: Measures shear adhesion when applied to a vertical standard steel panel.
Procedure B: NIST SRM 1810A measures shear adhesion when applied to vertical panel lined with standard chipboard.
Procedure C: It measures shear adhesion when applied to a vertical panel covered with a chipboard as defined by the Comite Europeen de Normalization (CEN).
Procedure D: Measures shear adhesion when applied to a vertical panel covered with a chipboard agreed upon by the buyer and seller.
Procedure E: Measures the shear adhesion of filament-reinforced tape when applied to a horizontal standard steel panel.
Procedure F: NIST SRM 1810A measures the shear adhesion of a filament-reinforced tape when applied to a horizontal panel covered with standard chipboard.
Procedure G: It measures the shear adhesion of a filament-reinforced tape when applied to a horizontal panel covered with a standard chipboard as defined by CEN.
Procedure H: It measures shear adhesion in the same way as Procedure A, except that the test is performed at an elevated temperature and after a 10-minute residence time at elevated temperature.

Procedure A measures the ability of a pressure-sensitive tape to adhere to a standard steel panel under constant tension. This may or may not be related to the tape's ability to adhere to other surfaces.

Procedures B, C and D can be used to determine the shear adhesion of tapes typically used to seal chipboard boxes in packaging applications.

Procedure D measures the slip adhesion of a pressure-sensitive tape to a non-standard chipboard, primed cardboard, corrugated board, or other agreed-upon surface for testing. This can be used to compare the shear adhesion of a tape to a particular fiberboard surface or to compare the shear adhesion of a tape to various fiberboard surfaces.

The surfaces of similar fiberboards can vary considerably between mills, between batches from a mill, and within batches. Be careful with sample selection and when comparing results between chipboard surfaces that may not be exactly the same.

The precision of tests performed on non-standard surfaces may differ from that described in Chapter 13. Procedures E, F, and G can be used to determine the holding ability of a filament-reinforced tape when placed under constant stress.

Procedure H can be used to compare the shear adhesion of tape applied to a standard steel surface and tested at high temperature. Using a high temperature during the test tends to reduce the duration of the test.

These procedures provide a means of assessing the adhesive uniformity of a particular type of pressure sensitive tape, usually tapes used for packaging applications. Evaluation can be within a roll of tape, between rolls or production batches.

Differences in tape backing and adhesive affect response; therefore, these procedures cannot be used to detect specific causes of non-uniformity. This test method is intended to replace AFERA 4012, CEN 1943 and PSTC.

Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system are not exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems will result in non-compliance with the standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

Our organization, EUROLAB, provides standard test methods services for the shear adhesion of pressure sensitive tapes, within the framework of national and international standards, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies. Provides testing services within the scope of ASTM D3654 standard.
