ASTM D3718 Test Standard for Low Chromium Concentrations in Paint

This standard covers the determination of chromium (including chromium oxide) content in the range of 0,005% to 1,0% found in solids of liquid coatings or dried films from pre-coated substrates. There is no reason to believe that higher levels cannot be determined with this test method, provided appropriate dilutions and adjustments are made to sample size and reagent amounts.

ASTM D3718 Test Standard for Low Chromium Concentrations in Paint

The liquid coating or dried film sample is prepared for analysis by dry ashing at 500°C followed by digestion with potassium permanganate and sulfuric acid at an elevated temperature in a polytetrafluoro-ethylene lined acid separation vessel. Chromium in the filtered digestion mixture is determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy.

Reagent grade chemicals will be used in all tests. Unless otherwise noted, all reagents are intended to conform to the specifications of the American Chemical Society's Analytical Reagents Committee where such specifications exist. Other grades may be used, provided it is first determined that the reagent is of high enough purity to allow use without degradation.

ASTM D3718 test services are provided by EUROLAB to enterprises within the scope of atomic absorption spectroscopy and low chromium concentration tests in paint.
