ASTM D3822 Test for Tensile Properties of Single Textile Fibers

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM D3822 testing. This standard covers the measurement of tensile properties of natural and synthetic single textile fibers of sufficient length to allow test specimens to be mounted on a tensile testing machine.

This test method can also be applied to continuous (filament) and discontinuous (flexible) fibers or filaments from yarns or tows. When the fibers to be tested contain crimp, or if the tow or yarns have been swelled, crimped or texturized, tensile properties are determined after crimp removal.

Testing of filaments from yarns or tows included in this test method is covered in Test Method D 2101, which was originally discontinued.

The words "fiber" and "filament" are used interchangeably throughout this test method.

This test method can also be applied to fibers extracted from yarns or yarns that are then turned into fabrics. It should be understood that the spinning and manufacturing processes can affect or change the tensile properties of the fibers. As a result, the tensile properties determined on fibers from yarns or treated yarns may differ from the same fibers before the yarn or fabric is subjected to production processes.

This test method provides guidelines for measuring the breaking force and elongation at break of single textile fibers and calculating the breaking strength, initial modulus, beam modulus, tangent modulus, tensile stress at specified elongation, and toughness at break.

Included are procedures for measuring the tensile properties of both conditioned and wet single fibers. The test method is applicable to testing under a wide variety of conditions.

As the length of the test specimen decreases, the tensile strength is likely to increase, but the accuracy of the determined tensile properties may decrease, necessitating the need to increase the number of test specimens. This is especially true for properties dependent on the measurement of elongation, since shorter lengths increase the relative effect of shear and strain of test specimens within the jaws of both clamps.

Values specified in acceptable metric units or other units will also be considered standard. The values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore each system should be used independently of the other, without combining values in any way.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
