EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D5511 standard. This test method covers the determination of the degree and rate of anaerobic biodegradation of plastic materials under high solids anaerobic conditions.
Test materials are exposed to a methanogenic vaccine derived from anaerobic digesters that work only on pretreated household waste. Anaerobic decomposition takes place under high solids (more than 30% total solids) and static unmixed conditions.
This test method is designed to give the percent conversion of carbon in the sample to gaseous carbon under conditions found in high solids anaerobic digesters by treating municipal solid waste. This test method may also resemble some conditions in biologically active landfills, where produced gas is recovered and biogas production is actively supported by inoculation.
This test method is designed to be applicable to all plastic materials that do not inhibit microorganisms found in anaerobic digesters operating with household waste.
Performance claims will be limited to the numerical result obtained in testing and will not be used for unqualified "biodegradable" claims. The reports shall clearly indicate the percentage of net gaseous carbon production for both test and reference samples at the end of the test. Also, the results will not be predicted after the actual duration of the test.
Values given in SI units will be accepted as standard.
