This standard defines a laboratory method for evaluating the wear properties of material combinations intended for use as bearing surfaces of human total joint prostheses.
While the body of this test method includes general methods applicable to all types of prosthetic wear applications, separate appendices describe wear test methods and clinical validation criteria specific to each different wear application (e.g., linear reciprocating motion, ball-cup ("hip") -type”) wear, delamination wear, etc.)
The purpose of this test method is to rank materials in each wear application for polymer wear rates under simulated physiological conditions. However, it should be recognized that contact geometries and wear movements are simplified using such methods. Therefore, this test method represents only an initial step in the full wear characterization of a candidate material.
All candidate materials should be tested in an appropriate co-simulator apparatus using prototype prostheses prior to use in clinical trials in patients. The tests described in this test method are used to quickly and reliably screen material combinations for wear performance in different orthopedic wear applications before being subjected to more expensive and time-consuming joint simulator tests. Additionally, these simplified tests can be used to relate material, surface quality or other parameters to wear behavior on a more practical basis than is possible in common simulator tests.
Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered separately as standard. Values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.
