There are four approved options for measuring fabric mass per unit area: Option A, Option B, Option C, and Option D. Option A can be used for acceptance testing of commercial shipments as it is widely used in commerce. The second option is Option B, which applies to a full width sample cut from a full piece, roll, bolt or cut. Unless otherwise stated, these results will include edging and will be on a conditioned fabric basis.
Option C applies when a small piece of fabric is sent to the laboratory to be used as a test sample. It is assumed that the results are valid only for the sample and not for the lot from which the sample was taken. Measurements made by this method do not include edges and should be reported as such unless a margin is specified. The last option is Option D, intended for use with tight fabrics as specified in the trade.

Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.
