ASTM D3874 Test Standard for Ignition of Materials by Hot Wire Welds

The ASTM D3874 standard, published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), aims to preliminarily distinguish materials in terms of their resistance to ignition due to their proximity to electrically heated cables and other heat sources.

ASTM D3874 Test Standard for Ignition of Materials by Hot Wire Welds

This test method applies to molded or sheet materials available in thicknesses up to 13.0 mm (0.51 inch). This test method applies to materials that are rigid or flexible at normal room temperatures. During preparation, particularly during the wire winding step described in 10.1, it is important to minimize deformation by following the method outlined in Clause 10, Sample Preparation. Examples of deformation include bending in the transverse or longitudinal direction, bending of the sample, and penetration of the wire into the sample to a degree that is visible to the eye during the wire wrapping step.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values given in parentheses after SI units are for information purposes only and are not considered standard.

This test method measures and describes the reaction of materials, products or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions, but all factors necessary for fire hazard or fire risk assessment alone, the fire conditions of materials, products or assemblies under actual conditions.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

Our organization also provides testing services within the scope of the ASTM D3874 test standard for the firing of materials with hot wire sources, within the framework of laboratory testing services.
