ASTM D395 Test Standard for Rubber Compression Property

The ASTM D395 standard, published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM), covers the testing of rubber intended for use in applications where the rubber will be subjected to compressive stresses in air or liquid media. Particularly applicable to rubber, vibration dampers and gaskets used in machine assemblies.

ASTM D395 Test Standard for Rubber Compression Property

ASTM D395 Test Standard;

Compression Set Under Constant Force in Air
Compression Set Under Fixed Deflection In Air
Considering the Material Hardness, the Compression Set test method under Constant Deflection in Air is covered.

The choice of test method is optional, but attention should be paid to the nature of the service for which correlation of test results may be desired. Unless specified otherwise in a detailed specification, Test Method B will be used. Test Method B is not suitable for vulcanizates harder than 90 IRHD. Values stated in SI units will be accepted as standard.

Example calculations for ASTM D395 are given as percentages. Essentially, the test is run and the sample height is measured to find out how much it has bounced back since compression. The calculation is specified to define the amount of height permanently lost. Thus, if a sample only returns to 80% of its original height, the compression set is given as 20%.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

Testing services are also provided by our organization within the scope of the ASTM D395 test standard for rubber compression properties, within the framework of laboratory testing services.
