ASTM D3960 Standard Test for Determining the Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Content of Paints and Related Coatings

Certain organic compounds that can be released under the specified firing conditions are not counted in the coating of the VOC content as they do not participate significantly in atmospheric photochemical reactions. Such negligibly photochemically reactive compounds are referred to in this application as exempt volatile compounds.

The VOC content is calculated as a function of the coating volume minus water and the volume of exempt volatile compounds and coating solids and the weight of the coating solids.
