ASTM D3985 Standard Test Method for Oxygen Gas Transmission Rate Through Plastic Film and Coating Using a Coulometric Sensor

This standard specifies a procedure for determining the steady-state transmission rate of oxygen gas through plastics in the form of film, sheet, laminates, co-extrusions, or plastic-coated papers or fabrics. It enables the determination of the oxygen gas transmission rate (OTR), the permeability of the film to oxygen gas (PO 2 ) and the oxygen permeability coefficient (P ′ O 2 ).

This standard does not claim to be the only method for OTR measurement. There may be other OTR determination methods using other oxygen sensors and procedures.

ASTM D3985 Test Method

The sample is mounted as a sealed semi-barrier between two chambers at ambient atmospheric pressure. One chamber is slowly cleaned by a stream of nitrogen and the other chamber contains oxygen. As the oxygen gas penetrates the nitrogen carrier gas through the film, it is transported to the coulometric detector, where it produces an electric current whose magnitude is proportional to the amount of oxygen flowing into the detector per unit time. Among them, oxygen gas is test gas and nitrogen gas is carrier gas. Because there is a certain concentration difference between both sides of the sample, the oxygen gas concentration of the upper chamber is higher than that of the lower chamber. During the conduction process, the oxygen gas is transmitted from the upper chamber to the lower chamber through the sample.

ASTM D3985 is currently the widely used standard for film oxygen permeability testing using an oxygen sensor. Temperature and humidity are critical parameters that affect the final test data. Therefore, a test environment's productivity check is one way to improve test accuracy.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, security issues associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices prior to use and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions.
