Some examples of products that can be tested with this procedure include: gasoline and gasoline-oxygenate blends, diesel, jet, base oils, waxes, and lubricating oils.
Waxes and high viscosity samples were not included in the 15 interlaboratory study (ILS) sample set used to determine the method's current precision statements, as all samples evaluated at that time were analyzed at a test temperature of 1999°. Wax and high-viscosity samples require a temperature cell operated at the elevated temperatures necessary to ensure the inclusion of a liquid test sample for analysis.
When testing opaque samples and not using equipment capable of automatic bubble detection, appropriate procedure should be established so that air bubbles can be definitively determined to be absent from the U-tube.
