ASTM D4060 Taber Wear Requirements Test Standard

The ASTM D4060 standard, published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), tests the wear resistance of taber abrasive and organic coatings. This type of testing method was introduced in the 1930s to perform accelerated wear testing. Its simplicity and effectiveness has helped the device be widely adopted worldwide for a multitude of test protocols and specifications on a wide variety of products.

According to ASTM D4060, testing involves mounting a flat specimen on a turntable that rotates horizontally at a constant speed. Two arms, each supporting an abrasive wheel, are then lowered so that each wheel contacts the surface. Before starting the test, a "suction arm" is lowered between the wheels to remove the abraded material from the surface of the sample. The turntable then begins to rotate the forceful friction-wear motion of the wheels against the surface of the sample for the specified number of cycles or until a certain mass of coating is lost or the wheels begin to expose the substrate. Micom offers Taber abrasive testing to ASTM D4060 as part of its Surface Coatings testing services.

ASTM D4060 is used to measure the abrasion resistance of organic coatings applied to flat, hard test specimens. ASTM D1044 is used for clear plastic materials to evaluate their capacity to retain their optical properties based on the typical wear expected during service.

According to ASTM D4060, abrasion resistance is usually measured as a weight or coating thickness loss after a specified number of cycles. By default each arm is loaded to apply 250g. press each wheel. Depending on the product/features used, this weight can be increased to 500g or 1000g. Abrasive discs are available in different grits for more or less abrasive action.
