ASTM D4168 Standard Test Methods for Conducted Shock Properties of On-Site Foam Cushioning Materials

The purpose of ASTM D4168 is to determine how good the shock absorber of on-site foam packaging materials is. There are two recommended test methods for this standard. These:

• Test Method A: free fall package drop tester
• Test Method B: shock tester

Any of these methods can be used. It is important to note, however, that they will not necessarily give the same results. The tests will measure the accelerations transmitted to the test block when the package is exposed to drops or shocks. The test is useful in determining the protective capacity of the foam packaging material on site. The method involves using plastic film, foam, and the box that is often used for packaging.

It is very important to record all the data related to the physical test sample. Samples must be of representative quality in order to be an indicator of field performance. It is recommended to rest the samples for at least 24 hours before testing. This ensures that the foam has the chance to harden and stabilize after pouring into the packaging.

To prepare the test sample:

• Manufacture of modified free rising bottom pillows - the foam should be distributed under the box, then place the barrier film over the foam and position the test block so that the foam rises. It is important to make sure that the foam is distributed to allow it to represent the actual packaging. They should not be overly dense or have large gaps.
• Manufacture of pre-folded lower pillows - the foam can be molded with a block that will provide the right dimensions out of the container. Again, make sure that the appropriate amount of foam is dispensed so that it is not too dense and has large voids.

Test machines must be installed in accordance with ASTM D4168 standards. The package must be conditioned before testing. It must be conditioned long enough to reach equilibrium. 

It is important to keep accurate measurements throughout the test so that everything can be included in the report. The test lab will prepare a report detailing the results of the test. This report will follow the guidelines specified in the ASTM standard.
