ASTM D4170 is a standard test to evaluate the anti-wear protection that a grease provides to the ball bearing. This standard provides a method for measuring grease wear protection and comparing multiple greases.

Bearings used in the test In this test, axial bearings of certain dimensions are used. Races must have ground surfaces.
Bearing cleaning procedure The method of cleaning the bearing before and after testing is carefully determined. Ultrasonic cleaning is used and testers need to wear gloves. The difference in mass before and after testing is used to measure wear, so this is very important.
Grease application Grease application method and amount of grease to be used are defined.
Test conditions Travel spring (12 degrees), frequency (30 Hz), test length (22 hours), and load on bearings (2450 N) are all specified.
