ASTM D4355 Standard Test Method for Deterioration of Geotextiles by Exposure to Light, Moisture, and Heat in a Xenon Arc Apparatus

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D4355 standard. The ASTM D4355 standard covers the determination of the deterioration in tensile strength of eotextiles by exposure to xenon arc radiation, moisture, and heat. The light and water exposure apparatus uses a xenon arc light source.

ASTM D4355 Standard Test Method for Deterioration of Geotextiles by Exposure to Light, Moisture, and Heat in a Xenon Arc Apparatus

It is intended to cause property changes by exposing samples to xenon arc radiation, moisture and heat (end-use conditions). Indeed, when polymers are exposed to such factors, their mechanical, electrical and optical properties can change significantly. Simulation of degradation by local weather conditions such as atmospheric pollution, biological attack and exposure to salt water is not intended with the exposure used in this application.

After each exposure period, samples are subjected to a shear or ravel strip tensile test to generate a degradation curve. Second, it allows the user to determine the tendency of a geotextile to degrade when exposed to various factors such as solar radiation, water and heat.

In fact, this standard permits the investigation of the effects of many factors associated with the material end-use conditions under consideration by subjecting it to an accelerated aging test. As a matter of fact, the deterioration caused by the effects of heat, humidity and sun rays is at the center of this method. However, degradation by local weather events such as biological attack and exposure to salt water is not considered by this test protocol.

More specifically, this standard describes the evolution of the tensile strength of the material through a distortion curve obtained by evaluating the tensile strength of the sample at predetermined times. From this curve it is possible to evaluate the tendency of the geotextile to rot when exposed to test factors. In addition, it is necessary to determine an acceleration factor from the collected data of the test to reflect the performance of the material on the field.

Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
