ASTM D445 Standard Test Method for Calculating Dynamic Viscosity and Kinematic Viscosity of Transparent and Opaque Liquids

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D445 standard. The ASTM D445 standard specifies a procedure for determining the kinematic viscosity (v) of liquid petroleum products, both transparent and opaque, by measuring the time it takes for a volume of liquid to flow under gravity through a calibrated glass capillary viscometer. The dynamic viscosity, η, can be obtained by multiplying the kinematic viscosity with ν, the density of the liquid, ρ.

The result obtained from this test method depends on the behavior of the sample and is primarily intended for application to liquids where shear stress and shear rates are proportional (Newtonian flow behavior). However, different results can be obtained from viscometers of different capillary diameters if the viscosity changes significantly with shear rate. Procedure and precision values are included for residual fuel oils that exhibit non-Newtonian behavior under certain conditions.

The kinematic viscosity range covered by this test method is between 0,2 mm²/s and 300.000 mm²/s at all temperatures. Sensitivity has been determined only for these materials, kinematic viscosity ranges and temperatures as shown in the footnotes to the sensitivity section.

Mercury has been identified by many regulatory agencies as a hazardous substance that can cause central nervous system, kidney and liver damage. Mercury or its vapors can be harmful to health and corrosive to materials. Care should be taken when working with mercury and products containing mercury.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. The SI unit used in this test method for kinematic viscosity is mm²/s and the SI unit used in this test method for dynamic viscosity is mPa·s.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

Our organization, EUROLAB, provides standard test method services for the calculation of kinematic viscosity and dynamic viscosity of transparent and opaque liquids, within the framework of national and international standards, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies. Provides testing services within the scope of ASTM D445 standard.
