EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D4491 standard. The ASTM D4491 standard covers procedures for determining the hydraulic conductivity (water permeability) of geotextile in terms of permeability under standard test conditions in the uncompressed state.
There are three procedures included: the constant pressure and falling pressure methods using a water flow apparatus, and the air flow method using an air flow apparatus. Permeability is determined by a constant or falling load test.
Constant Load Test
During the test, a water height of 50 mm (2 inches) is maintained on the sample. The amount of flow is measured against time. The constant pressure test is used when the flow rate of water through the geotextile is so great that it is difficult to obtain pressure change readings against time in a falling pressure test.
Drop Load Test
A column of water is allowed to flow through the geotextile and readings of pressure changes over time are taken. The flow rate of water through the geotextile should be slow enough to get accurate readings.
Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units should be considered separately as standard. The values specified in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure compliance with the standard, each system should be used independently of the other and the values obtained from the two systems should not be combined.
