ASTM D4533 Standard Test Method for Trapezoid Tear Strength of Geotextiles

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM D4533 standard. The ASTM D4533 standard is an index test used to measure the force required to continue or propagate tearing in trapezoidal woven or nonwoven geotextiles. While useful for quality control and acceptance testing, trapezoidal tear testing does not provide all the necessary information for all design applications and other testing methods must be used.

ASTM D4533 Standard Test Method for Trapezoid Tear Strength of Geotextiles

This test method is applicable to most geotextiles including woven fabrics, nonwovens, layered fabrics, knitted fabrics and felts used for geotextile applications.

The trapezoidal tear method is a test that produces tension along a reasonably defined course for the tear to spread across the width of the specimen. For woven fabrics, trapezoidal tear strength is primarily determined by the properties of the yarns gripped into the clamps. In nonwovens, maximum trapezoidal tear strength is reached when the resistance to further redirection is greater than the force required to simultaneously tear one or more fibers, as the individual fibers are more or less randomly oriented and have some reorientation ability in the direction of the applied load.

The trapezoidal tear strength method is useful for estimating the relative tear strength of different fabrics or different directions in the same fabric.

This test method can be used for acceptance testing of commercial shipments; however, caution is advised as information on inter-laboratory sensitivity is lacking. Comparative tests may be recommended.

When using this test method for acceptance testing of commercial shipments, in the event of disagreement due to differences in reported test results, the buyer's and supplier's laboratories should perform comparative tests to determine whether there is a statistical bias. Competent statistical assistance is recommended for investigating bias.

As a minimum, the two parties should receive a batch of test samples that are as homogeneous as possible and come from as many materials of that type. An equal number of test samples should then be randomly assigned to each laboratory for testing. Average results from the two laboratories should be compared using the appropriate Student's t-test and an acceptable level of probability chosen by the two parties before starting the test. If a bias is found, the cause must be found and corrected, or the buyer and supplier must agree to interpret future test results in light of known bias.

Most geotextile fabrics can be tested with this test method. Depending on its construction, some modifications of the tightening techniques may be required for a particular fabric. Special adaptation may be required with strong fabrics or fabrics made of glass fibres, to prevent them from slipping on the clamps or being damaged by being pinched in the clamps.

This test method can be used with constant traverse velocity (CRT) or constant extension velocity (CRE) type tension machines. However, there may not be an overall correlation between the CRT machine and the CRE machine. As a result, these two voltage testers are not interchangeable. In the event of an argument, the CRE machine will prevail.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

This standard is not meant to address all safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to determine appropriate safety and health practices prior to use and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions.
