ASTM D4587 Standard Practice for Exposure of Paint and Related Coatings to Fluorescent UV Conditioning

The ASTM D4587 standard describes the selection of test conditions required for accelerated aging by UV testing and also covers sample preparation and evaluation of results. As a result, this method allows to investigate the effects of humidity, heat and sunlight on the physical and optical properties of the sample.

ASTM D4587 Standard Practice for Exposure of Paint and Related Coatings to Fluorescent UV Conditioning

The standard is based on the external integrity and appearance of our FRP enclosures when exposed to outdoor conditions over an extended period of time. Finally, this application is based on the use of UV fluorescent lamps and is therefore based on ASTM G154 and ISO 4892-3 standards.

The purpose of this test protocol is to determine the reflections of sunlight, moisture, and heat on the sample and evaluate its ability to retain its properties. To characterize this capacity, it is necessary to accelerate property changes in the sample through UV testing. By selecting the appropriate operating conditions of the apparatus, it is possible to study the evolution of the coating's properties at an accelerated rate, and the data collected can be used to reflect the performance of the sample using an acceleration factor.

However, this standard is not suitable for characterizing degradation caused by local weather events. The main factors to consider when running this test are: exposure time and temperature.

The minimum number of samples required is three and typical test conditions are listed below. Each test cycle is defined in table 4587 of the ASTM D1 standard.

Parameters System Features
Conditioning conditions 23 ± 2 °C (73 ± 3 °F)
50% ± 5% relative humidity
Conditioning period 24h (Cooked and radiation-cured coatings)
7 days (All other skins)
Exposure time Must be defined
test cycles Cycle 1 (Automotive coatings)
Cycle 2 (Industrial care paints)
Cycle 3 (Exterior wood veneers)
Cycle 4 (General metal coatings)
