This test method covers the determination of the chloride ion in engine coolants in the range of 0,6 to 5 ppm, in the presence of up to 200% by weight of mercaptobenzothiazole.
Other materials reacting with the silver ion will mix. Chloride in engine coolants containing aryltriazole instead of mercaptobenzothiazole can be determined directly by this test method without pretreatment with hydrogen peroxide.
The sample is first treated with aqueous hydrogen peroxide at a pH of 12 to 13 to oxidize the mercaptobenzothiazole to the soluble, non-interfering sulfonate. The treated sample is dissolved in glacial acetic acid and titrated potentiometrically with a dilute standard silver nitrate solution. Since the solubility of silver chloride in this system is sufficient to prevent proper bending at the very low limit of the test method, some chloride is deliberately added to the glacial acetic acid solvent and then corrected by blind titration.
This test method allows the detection of very low levels of chloride ions in engine coolants that normally contain the common corrosion inhibitor, mercaptobenzothiazole or related mercaptans, which would also interfere with titration by forming insoluble silver salts with silver nitrate.
