ASTM D4719 Pre-Hole Pressure Gauge Test in Soils

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM D4719 testing. This standard covers pressure gauge testing of soils at a specified depth in the ground in a suitable pre-drilled open test cavity.

ASTM D4719 Pre-Hole Pressure Gauge Test in Soils

Pressure gauge testing is an in situ stress-strain test performed on the wall of a test cavity using a radially expanding circular cylindrical probe. To achieve viable test results, test cavity distortion must be minimized with minimal clearance between the probe diameter and the test cavity. Alternatively, when pre-drilling does not provide an acceptable test cavity, the probe can be placed directly on the ground to create the test cavity.

This test method includes the procedure of performing test cavity preparation, probe insertion, and pressure gauge tests in both granular and cohesive soils, but does not include high pressure testing in rock. Knowledge of the type of soil to be tested is necessary to evaluate the test cavity preparation method, interpretation of test data, and acceptability of test results.

This test method does not include self-piercing pressure gauges in which a hole is pierced in the hollow core of the probe with a mechanical or spray tool. This test method is limited to the type of pressure gauge inserted into pre-drilled holes or, under certain conditions, driven or pushed.

Two alternative test procedures are provided as follows:

  • Procedure A— Equal Pressure Increases
  • Procedure B— Equal Volume Increases

Pressure gauge tests in rock or using a self-extracting pressure gauge follow test procedures similar to those described here, but are not covered by this test method.

Strain-controlled tests can also be performed in which the probe volume is increased at a constant rate and the corresponding pressures are measured. Strain-controlled tests may yield results that differ from the procedures described in this test method.

The procedures used in this standard to specify how data is collected/recorded and calculated are considered industry standard. Additionally, they often represent significant figures to keep. The procedures used do not take into account material variation, the purpose for which the data was obtained, special-purpose studies or any other considerations for the user's purposes; and it is common practice to increase or decrease the significant digits of the reported data commensurate with these considerations. It is beyond the scope of this standard to consider key figures used in analysis methods for engineering design.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. Reporting of test results in units other than SI will not be considered non-compliance with this test method.
