Standard Test Method for Random Vibration Testing of ASTM D4728 Shipping Containers

ASTM D4728 testing covers random vibration testing of filled shipping units. Such tests can be used to evaluate the performance of a container with its inner packaging and closures, in terms of robustness and the protection it provides to the contents when subjected to random vibration ingress.

This test method provides guidance on the development and use of vibration data in the testing of shipping containers.

Shipping containers are subject to complex dynamic stresses in the distribution environment. An approximation of actual real-life damage or lack of damage may require random vibration testing of the container and its contents. In this way, many product and container resonances are excited at the same time.

During random vibration tests, resonance deposits are less intense than during sinusoidal resonance stay or sweep tests. Therefore, unrealistic fatigue damage due to resonance accumulation is minimized.

Random vibration tests should be based on representative field data. Whenever possible, confidence levels can be improved by comparing laboratory test results with actual field shipment effects. See D4169 Practice for recommended random vibration tests. (See Annex X1 and Annex X2 for related information.)

There is no direct equivalence between random vibration tests and sinusoidal vibration tests. Equivalent tests between sine and random are generally difficult to set up due to nonlinearity, damping and product response characteristics.

Exposure to vibration affects the shipping container, its inner packaging, closures and contents. This test allows analysis of the interaction between these components. A design change to one or all of these components can be used to achieve optimum performance in the shipping environment.

Random vibration tests detect such known stresses, i.e. rail joints, pot holes, etc.

Random vibration can be performed on any axis (vertical or horizontal) or in any packet orientation. However, different test levels may be used for each axis, depending on the area environment to be simulated.
