ASTM F1862 Standard Test Method for Resistance of Medical Face Masks to Penetration by Synthetic Blood

The ASTM F1862 test is used to evaluate the resistance of medical face masks to penetration by the action of a small volume (~2 mL) of high-velocity synthetic blood flow. Medical face mask pass - fail determinations are based on visual detection of synthetic blood penetration.

ASTM F1862 Standard Test Method for Resistance of Medical Face Masks to Penetration by Synthetic Blood

This test method does not apply to all forms or conditions of bloodborne pathogen exposure. Users of the test method should review their face exposure modes and evaluate the suitability of this test method for their particular application.

This test method primarily considers the performance of materials or certain material structures used in medical face masks. This test method does not consider the performance of medical face mask design, construction or interfaces, or other factors that have the potential to affect the overall protection and operation (such as filtration efficiency and pressure drop) of the medical face mask. Procedures for measuring these properties are contained in Test Methods F 2101 and MIL-M-36954C.

This test method does not address the breathability of medical face mask materials or other properties that affect ease of breathing through the medical face mask. This test method evaluates medical face masks as protective clothing.

This test method does not evaluate the performance of medical face masks for airborne routes of exposure or in preventing penetration of aerosolized body fluids that have accumulated on the medical face mask.

Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will also be considered standard. The pressure values specified in each system are not exactly equivalent. However, since the corresponding rates are within 1% of each other, results are allowed to be reported in both units.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
